The Cyclist by Natalia Goncharova

The Cyclist by Natalia Goncharova was done in 1913 before World War I. It is oil on canvas, and the style is Post-Impressionism.  This represents movement and motion with the man on his bike moving down the street. the background is somewhat blurry creating that sense of speed and movement; almost fooling the eye. It was sold in 2007 for 9.8 million dollars, this set a record for any female artist.

  1. I really like the "Dog on a leash". I think that's adorable. I wonder how artists thought of how to paint movement like that on a canvas. I would never think to do that, I always thought of movement as one of those flip books that I made when I was little. This is cool and I love little dogs!

  2. I thought that Dog on a Leash was more accurate in its' depiction of fast motion, or perhaps because it was almost more comical in its' execution, but I like this one better because it makes reality seem more fragmented.

  3. The Cyclist isn't Post-Impressionist, it's actually Futurist. The movement, originally Italian, became popular in Russia at the end of 1912.
